The words "Enter to Learn, Go Forth to Serve" carved in stone above the steps of Pleasantville High School are more than a motto; they are a living ethos of the history, academics, and culture of a nurturing educational environment which enables students to be successful today and make great contributions in the future.

During all four years, the student is guided and encouraged by a dedicated and experienced faculty and staff to face challenges with the confidence and open-mindedness to persevere and prevail. From our halls emerge caring, responsible citizens, academically and ethically prepared for the 21st-century global society.

  • The English Department at Pleasantville High School is committed to fostering a deep appreciation for literature and developing strong communication skills in students. Its primary goals include the study of major literary genres through an exploration of both ancient and modern world literature as well as the cultivation of advanced writing abilities to prepare students for college-level coursework, career readiness, and lifelong learning. Students are expected to master the fundamentals of formal and informal writing, including correct spelling, punctuation, and the use of sophisticated vocabulary.

To achieve these goals, the department emphasizes close reading and analysis of study of major literary works while integrating extensive vocabulary development and writing practice across all levels. Instruction focuses on writing as a process—encouraging brainstorming, outlining, drafting, revising, and editing—to improve content, mechanics, and style. Students are introduced to the foundations of research writing and guided through major papers, ensuring the development of critical thinking and analytical skills essential for academic success.

  • The High School Mathematics Department is committed to providing a comprehensive curriculum aligned with NYS Mathematical Standards that supports all learners while guiding students from strong foundational skills to advanced problem solving. We strive to build deep conceptual understanding, strengthen problem-solving abilities, and develop clear mathematical reasoning and communication. Through rigorous instruction tailored to varied ability levels, flexible grouping, and project-based learning, we foster confidence, curiosity, perseverance, and a growth mindset. By integrating real-world applications, technology, and modern mathematical practices, we prepare students for college, careers, and meaningful engagement with mathematics beyond the classroom.

We are equally committed to ensuring that every student has access to opportunities for growth, exploration, and mastery. Electives such as Computer Science, Quantitative Reasoning, College Algebra, and AP Statistics, expand pathways for deeper study and discovery while our Math Workshop model provides targeted support for diverse learners. Together, these experiences encourage collaboration, critical thinking, and a lasting appreciation for mathematics, empowering students to see themselves as capable and confident problem solvers.

  • The Science Department seeks to deepen students’ understanding of the physical and biological world while teaching principles of scientific thought and problem-solving. It emphasizes the implications of scientific discoveries on human welfare and fosters an appreciation for the beauty and mystery of nature.

Goals are achieved through a solid foundation in diverse scientific disciplines, extensive hands-on experimentation, and over 2000 minutes of laboratory experience. Technology integration, including Vernier Probeware and multimedia tools, enhances inquiry-based learning. Courses and electives are designed to meet the needs of all students, from Regents-level classes to advanced STEM opportunities.

  • The Social Studies Department aims to cultivate informed, responsible citizens who understand democratic values, global interdependence, and the impact of technology on society. Students explore the behavioral sciences and learn that knowledge is dynamic and subject to reevaluation. The department emphasizes civic engagement and the responsibilities of citizenship.

To achieve these goals, students receive a strong foundation in social science disciplines and experience history through engaging lessons and hands-on activities. Technology integration, including digital multimedia, enhances learning and prepares students for modern challenges. The department also adapts its offerings based on student feedback, ensuring relevant and meaningful coursework that promotes student engagement at all levels of readiness, while also providing opportunities for students to pursue advanced study through courses that incorporate college‑level content. Students develop the skills and confidence needed for future academic success and deepen their understanding of the world around them.

  • The World Languages Department invites every student to discover the joy of connecting with the world through language while building strong proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and cultural understanding.

Students engage in a vibrant Communicative Approach at every level, developing their Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational skills through immersive classroom experiences, real‑life applications, and project‑based learning that mirror authentic interactions. As they explore meaningful cultural comparisons, they deepen their appreciation for the history, customs, and traditions of societies connected to their chosen language.

The department offers full language sequences in Spanish, French, and Italian, supporting both middle school continuers and ninth‑grade beginners—including newcomers, students restarting their studies, or those adding a second language. Middle school learners are thoughtfully placed into Honors or Regular tracks, while ninth‑grade beginners follow an engaging and supportive pathway designed for success.

Students can further enrich their learning through Honors courses, Advanced Placement classes, and a wide range of electives. Italian Dual Enrollment provides an additional opportunity to earn college credit while deepening linguistic and cultural understanding. With continuous exposure to the target language, learners develop fluency and cultural competence that prepare them to participate confidently and thoughtfully as a global citizen.

  • The Art Department celebrates individuality and encourages students to develop their artistic potential through exploration, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving. Recognizing art as an essential part of life, the department strives to beautify the school community and promote the visibility of the arts.

Goals are achieved through diverse course offerings, exhibitions, and community projects such as stained glass installations and local art shows. Students engage in a wide range of media and techniques, fostering creativity and self-expression.

  • The High School Music program offers students multiple pathways to deepen their musical skills, explore personal interests, and participate in meaningful performance and creative experiences. Students may choose from a range of offerings including Band, Chorus, Orchestra, Jazz Band, Music Theory, AP Music Theory, Drama and specialized ensembles, allowing them to pursue music as performers, creators, scholars, or a combination of all three. Across all courses, instruction emphasizes high-level musicianship, collaboration, and personal expression while fostering a strong sense of community and belonging.

All music courses share common goals centered on listening, performing, creating, and responding to music. Students refine their technical skills, musical literacy, and expressive performance while engaging with diverse genres, styles, and historical contexts. Frequent performance opportunities, both within the school and beyond, allow students to apply their learning in authentic settings and develop confidence, discipline, and leadership. Courses in music theory and composition provide additional opportunities for students to analyze, create, and understand music at an advanced level, supporting both academic and artistic growth.

Beyond the classroom, the High School Music program plays a visible role in the life of the school and the broader community. Students regularly represent the district through NYSSMA evaluations, All-County and All-State ensembles, regional honor groups, and collaborative performances with organizations such as the Sleepy Hollow Jazz Festival, Music In The Parks, as well as appearances at venues like Radio City Music Hall. The annual spring musical serves as a cornerstone community event, uniting student musicians, performers, technicians, and designers in a shared creative endeavor. Throughout the program, instruction is student-centered and flexible, allowing students to pursue individualized pathways, balance multiple interests, and build lasting connections through music.
